About the Designer

Michael Mortell is a fashion designer and gallerist of mid-twentieth century furniture and interiors.

After graduating from fashion college in Manchester, to which he had won a government scholarship while attending the Crawford School of Art in Cork, Michael set up his own clothing company at the same time as fellow contemporaries such as Paul Costelloe and John Rocha.

The company proved to be a great success and when the Late Late TV Show, under the legendary Gay Byrne, started the Late Late Show Fashion Awards in the mid 80's Michael was unique in being the overall winner of this prestigious award for the first three successive years, a distinction never achieved by any Irish fashion designer since. So much so that in the fourth year of the show they asked Michael to be a judge instead of a competitor!

In the mid 90's Michael decided to concentrate exclusively on the design and manufacture of rainwear as this had always been a great success within his clothing ranges – mens and ladies. The rainwear ranges were bought by some of the most prestigious stores in the world such as Harrods and Harvey Nichols in London, Barneys and Bloomingdales in New York and Brown Thomas in Dublin.

Having always had a great interest in the aesthetics of interiors and furnishings Michael set up a gallery in 2008 specialising in furniture, ceramics, glassware and lighting etc from mainly the first half of the 20th Century up to the end of the 1950s, sourced primarily from Europe. Michael's store in Francis Street, Dublin 8, has been a strong force in the introduction of mid-century modern furniture to the Irish interiors market, a design period which complements beautifully the modern interiors design aesthetic.
